"Sacred Road" was used by Maurice Barrès to describe the road linking Bar-Le-Duc to Verdun during the First World War. It was used for the transport of troops, supplies and munitions. he road was widened to 7 metres, allowing three vehicles to move abreast along it. An endless string of lorries travelled up to, and back from, the Front on this road.
oday, the Sacred Road is marked by commemorative milestones. May they remind visitors who make a pilgrimage to this area that, for millions of men, this was the first, and often the last, stage in their dreadful agony.
